Peter David art auction! In development-first report

For those that haven't heard, in late December Peter David had a stroke while vacationing with his family in Florida. He’s currently recuperating in a facility in Jacksonville until he’s well enough to travel home.

I've just heard today, he's doing great and going home early!!

Many have asked how they can help. Here's the best answer from Peter's wife Kathleen.:
"Many people have asked how you can help. First: THANK YOU. Here’s how.
The most direct way is to buy his e-books from Crazy 8 Press (via ComicMix) or from Amazon or Barnes and Noble websites. These are books that he gets the money from directly and the most per book. The quickest and most money is buying the EPub versions from ComicMix, by the way. The more we sell of these books, the easier it will be for us to pay the bills as they start to pour in. All the books are in the sidebar.
Buying his other books does help– especially the Marvel graphic novels he has written. The Crazy 8 books are the most immediate help but all his writings do help the family and the family’s ability to pay bills. If you buy via Amazon, please use this link, and if you buy via Barnes & Noble, please use this link, which will bring in even more funds.
Buy X-Factor. Put it on your pull list at your local comic book store. Encourage others to do the same. Peter is still writing it and will continue to write it. Issue 250 ships on Jan 15th, 2012 (today) and is a great jumping on point for both X-factor and something Peter has been working on in the Marvel Universe since his Hulk days."

I've done my best to help Peter and Kathleen get the word out and even got Kathleen to talk to us on our podcast to tell Peter's story.

...But I wanted to do more so I came up with an idea...
Let's do an art auction featuring all of Peter David's characters; those that he created or those that belong to Marvel and DC that he brought to life in that special Peter David way!

Originally, I wanted to do one big jam piece of all the characters drawn by different artists so I called on some friends to see if they'd be interested. Then it occurred to me that 1 big jam piece(as great as it would be) would not bring in as much money as separate pieces and would be a logistical nightmare as well as costing a fortune in postage stamps. So I decided separate pieces of art from each artist, but I would still have every artist contribute a unique character, otherwise we'd have 20 Maddrox's(though that might be somewhat appropriate when you think about it).

I approached IDW edtor, Chris Ryall and Marvel X-book editor, Nick Lowe to see if I could make use of their rolodex. They were kind enough to send out emails and as a result I received responses from most of the contributing artists.

Thanks guys!! much appreciated!

The actual auction is in mid-February and will be announced here and elsewhere soon, but for now, I wanted to share some of the pieces we have already received.
Emanuela Lupacchino (X-Factor:Syren)

Pablo Raimondi (X-Factor: alt cover for issue #47, part of Marvel's 70th Anniversary )

Paul Davidson (X-Factor: 246 page 10)
Paul Davidson (X-Factor: 246 page 16)

J.K.Woodward(Fallen Angel:Liandra -w/ Peter himself)

Jamal Igle (Linda Danvers Supergirl and Ariella)
Jamal's piece is not yet finished but he was kind enough to share his thoughts on it with this thumbnail. This is so sweet, I'm already getting a toothache! definitely the right artist for these characters!!
Here are a list of the contributing artists so far:

  • Pablo Raimondi (X-Factor:cover Maddrox)
  • Valentine De Landro (X-Factor:Layla)
  • Steve Bryant (Fallen Angel:Jude)
  • Jamal Igle (Linda Danvers Supergirl and Ariella)
  • Emanuela Lupacchino (X-Factor:Syren)
  • Paul Davidson (X-Factor: pages)
  • Joe Corroney (Spike)
  • JkWoodward (Fallen angel:Liandra)

We are still collecting pieces and I will announce more as they come in.

If you are a professional comic illustrator who has worked with Peter David in the past and would like to contribute art, please contact me at jkwoodward1205@gmail.com with the "Peter David Fund-Raiser" in the subject line. It will be very much appreciated. We have plenty more characters, so feel free to mention your first choice. It may actually still be available.

  1. Sad no one has done a Spider-Man 2099 sketch. That is a character PAD brought to life and it has seen longevity even after the demise of the 2099 line.

Keep us informed please. I will try and work some posts on my blog and on G+ as you have more info.

  3. Barry, I completely agree! Peter co created that character and I very much want to see a Spider Man 2099 as well. There's still hope! It's early yet and I'm still getting artists contacting me. Hopefully before the auction starts in 2 weeks, we'll get one. fingers crossed!
